ASU is Talkin’ Trash! Representatives from ASU’s School of Sustainability, Waste Management, and Ironman Join Us!
This week, Diana Dehm, Host of Sustainability News & Entertainment heads to Arizona State University, home of the Sun Devils and the nation’s first School of Sustainability to talk some trash!
Nick Brown, Director of University Sustainability Practices at Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability joins Diana to discuss all of the advantageous endeavors ASU is taking on. ASU has committed to climate neutrality by 2035, and to becoming zero waste by 2015. That’s only about a year out! ASU has partnered with Waste Management to create their Road Map to Zero Waste which outlines the plan as to how ASU will achieve this goal. We are also incredibly fortunate to have Nick Brown apply his expertise in conducting the metrics for our 2013 Trash on Your Back 5 Day Challenge and to have ASU partnering with us to make this happen!
Christine Soboleski, graduate from the School of Sustainability and our Director of Communications here at Sustainability News & Entertainment shares her experience in working with Nick on food sustainability solutions at ASU. These two share a passion for creating sustainable solutions for the planet. Christine shares what she learned as a Sustainability scholar and the positive social, economic, and environmental effects in decreasing our impact through The Sustainability News & Entertainment Radio TRASH ON YOUR BACK 5 Day Challenge.
Bryan McLaren, Sustainability Consultant for Waste Management and Project Manager for ASU’s Zero Waste program joins Diana as well. Bryan will be doing the Ironman Challenge during Novermber 2013 with his trash on his back! Representing the TRASH ON YOUR BACK effort! Bryan discusses the techniques used to inspire and engage students to be more inclined to participate in zero waste practices. Additionally, Bryan discusses how Ironman expresses a value for community through proper waste management efforts.

First up is Jim McGrath, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Green Schools National Network. The Green Schools National network is responsible for bringing key stakeholders together at the Green Schools National Conference. At this annual conference students, teachers, businesses, government, policy makers, non-profits, administrators, parents and educational leaders come together to learn how we are creating green schools for our next generation by educating and empowering our youth.
Following Jim is Seth Goldman, President and CTO of Honest Tea, the first organic and Fair Trade bottled tea, now owned by Coca-Cola. Seth discusses why the company is dedicated to providing sustainable beverages to school children, as well as Honest Tea’s commitment to honesty.
We wrap things up with Dr. Shawn Hayes, Chief Academic Officer and Director of Research and Education of Health Corps. Health Corps is a non-profit that was founded by Dr. Oz in an effort to fight childhood obesity. Health Corps trains recent college graduates to facilitate wellness programs in high schools around the United States in an effort to change the wellness culture of schools. Health Corps activates and empowers students through health education so they are ready and able to tackle issues concerning health and sustainability.

First up is Nicole Hansen, Founder and President of Green Galaxy Enterprises. Green Galaxy Enterprises is a renewable energy consulting business focused on building partnerships among green technology companies, the entertainment industry, governments, educational institutions, and nonprofits. Nicole discuses how she has linked business, entertainment and sustainability together through utilizing her background in film and entertainment, as well has key moments which have lead to the development of her business concept.
Following Nicole is Dr. Woodrow Clark II, a long-time advocate for the environment and renewable energy, an internationally recognized author, lecturer, public speaker and advisor specializing in sustainable communities. Dr. Clark was one of the contributing scientists to the work of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (UNIPCC) which as an organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2007. Dr. Clark discusses his book “The Green Industrial Revolution”, the economics behind sustainable development, and as his vision of what it really means to be a sustainable community.
